@melaredblu: I don't think kids really comprehend what they do to that extent ^_^;; So it's dark, but he doesn't mean it evilly lol

@hkmaly: Children do bad things, but don't fully understand that what they do is bad, so he's not doing it to cause pain or be "evil", he's doing it because it's a means to an end for him.
And he does, he literally kills pirates in some of the side stories, and in like the 3rd chapter he asks John if he wants to go kill a pirate in the pampas grass. This isn't the Disney version, after all.
